  • Take action for safer sunscreen ingredients!

The federal Food and Drug Administration last approved a general usage, over-the-counter sunscreen ingredient in 1999, and six new ingredients – already used in sunscreens in Europe and other parts of the world – have been awaiting a decision for more than eight years.

The Sunscreen Innovation Act could be coming up for a vote in the Senate THIS WEEK. The bill aims to alleviate the FDA’s backlog by expediting reviews of promising sunscreen ingredients while ensuring that the agency has the authority to keep unsafe ingredients off the market. This would give consumers more, and safer, options.

If you agree that consumers in the United States deserve access to the same ingredients used in sunscreens in the EU, Canada, Japan, and Australia, please tell your senator to support the Sunscreen Innovation Act today.

Use the form below to tell your senator to support the Sunscreen Innovation Act!

  • Tell Gov. Brown to sign good environmental bills into law

The California State Legislature has recently passed four pieces of environmental legislation that EWG strongly supports. These bills will become law once Gov. Jerry Brown signs them.

But time is running out. We have less than 30 days left for the governor to act. Let’s make sure Gov. Brown knows we’re counting on him to do the right thing before it's too late.

Use the form below to tell Gov. Brown to sign SB 1019, SB 1281, SB 193 and SB 812 into law immediately!

  • Take Action: Keep 2,4-D away from our schools!

The Environmental Protection Agency is considering an application by Dow Chemical Co. to use a combination of glyphosate, the chemical in Monsanto’s Roundup, with 2,4-D, a highly toxic weed killer, on genetically engineered corn and soybeans designed to withstand 2,4-D.

According to a recent EWG analysis, there are 3,247 elementary schools within 1,000 feet and 487 within 200 feet of a corn or soybean field that could be sprayed with the toxic chemical 2,4-D if the EPA approves Dow's application.

Exposure to 2,4-D has been linked to Parkinson’s disease, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and reproductive and immune system problems. Children are especially vulnerable to the toxic effects of pesticides, and we should and must do everything we can to protect them.

Before the EPA makes its final decision, the agency’s leadership needs to hear from YOU right now. Stand with EWG today to protect human health and the environment: Tell the EPA not to approve Dow’s application of 2,4-D herbicide for use on genetically engineered crops!

Use the form to the right to add your name to our petition to the EPA.

If the Dow application is approved, the 2,4-D experiment would roll out on a grand scale: likely on tens of millions of acres, leading to 2,4-D pollution of food, water, residential areas and wildlife habitat. We need to do everything we can to make sure the EPA keeps this toxic weed killer away from our food and out of our environment.

  • Support SB 1019

In a major victory for health this year, new California standards made the use of toxic flame retardant chemicals in new furniture voluntary.

SB 1019 will give you the information you need to make less toxic choices by requiring upholstered-furniture manufacturers to indicate whether or not a product contains added flame retardant chemicals.

Use the form below to tell your state assembly member to support SB 1019!

  • Get toxic chemicals out of our couches!

Environmental Working Group researchers teamed up with Duke University scientists to test the urine of 48 mothers and children and found evidence of exposure to TDCIPP, a cancer-causing fire retardant, in every person tested. The children had an average of five times as much as the mothers of a chemical formed when TDCIPP breaks down in the body.

TDCIPP is commonly found in polyurethane foam manufactured for upholstered furniture, automotive cushioning and infant goods like changing table pads and nursing pillows. The Consumer Product Safety Commission wants to develop a national flammability standard for upholstered furniture. That may sound like a good thing, but it won’t be if the commission’s standard leads to expanded use of toxic fire retardant chemicals.

Use this form to sign EWG’s petition to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. We need a national furniture flammability standard that does not encourage or require chemical fire retardants.

  • Freeze the corn ethanol mandate!

Would you pump fuel into your car that lowered your gas mileage, made it flunk emission standards and might void the warranty?

We didn’t think so. But E15 – fuel that is a blend of gasoline and 15 percent ethanol – could do just that. And it’s about to hit the market.

The House of Representatives is about to vote on H.R. 875, a bill that would freeze the corn ethanol mandate by preventing any E15 from going on the market until more research can be conducted.

Ethanol producers have a lot of political power, but we have you standing with us.

Use the form below to take action right now and tell your member of Congress to support H.R. 875!

Representatives Peter DeFazio (D-OR) and Chellie Pingree (D-ME) have written a Congressional sign-on letter urging the EPA and USDA to reject Dow’s application for Enlist Duo. There’s no time to waste – please ask your representative to join them and sign the letter today.

  • Support healthy school lunch!

The U.S. House of Representatives could vote any day now on an agriculture appropriations bill that would loosen school nutrition standards and put corporate profits ahead of our children’s health.

With as many as one in three children at risk for often preventable diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, rolling back nutrition standards in schools is the last thing we should be doing. We must stand up for the health of our children now.

Stand with EWG in this fight: Tell your member of Congress to vote for healthier school lunches, not pizza and french fries.

  • Support SB 1381 – GE labeling in California!

The California State Senate will vote on SB 1381 this week. This bill would give Californians the information they need to make more informed decisions by requiring genetically engineered foods sold in California to be labeled. It is NOT a BAN on GE foods.

This week’s vote is a make-or-break moment: if we win, the bill moves to the Assembly. If we lose, then the fight is over for this session. You must make your voice heard right now.

Use the form below to tell your state senator to vote yes on SB 1381!

  • Urgent action needed: Defeat the Chemicals in Commerce Act!

Thousands of untested chemicals could be labeled safe with little or no testing.

A subcommittee of the House of Representatives could be voting on the Chemicals in Commerce Act as soon as next week. It’s beyond the pale. This industry-backed bill is nothing more than a rubber stamp for untested chemicals.

  • Tell the EPA to investigate the risks of DPA on U.S. Foods!

It’s been 16 years since the EPA last investigated the possible hazards of diphenylamine (DPA). This chemical is widely used on conventional apples in the United States. But it was banned in Europe in 2012 after European scientists used new scientific data that the EPA wasn’t even aware of that showed DPA might break down to cancer-causing compounds!

Sign the petition: Stand with EWG in demanding that the EPA launch a new review of DPA’s potential dangers. The American public deserves the same level of protection from pesticide risks as residents of European Union countries.

  • Oppose the DARK Act!

Big Food industry lobbyists - including the front group The Coalition for Safe Affordable Food - are once again trying to gain Congressional support in favor of a reprehensible anti-labeling bill.

The Deny Americans the Right to Know - or DARK - Act would block states from requiring GE labels and even let foods with GE ingredients be labeled "natural."

We need a supernova of opposition right now.

Coloradans are 30 percent more likely to be diagnosed with melanoma than people in other states. And our state legislature is taking action to do something about this disturbing fact. The state Senate will soon vote on a bill to keep teenagers from using UV tanning beds.

But this is going to be a hard fight. Take action today!

  • It's Time for Real Toxics Reform!

Our nation's broken toxic chemicals policy recently left 300,000 West Virginians without drinkable tap water. The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) is so weak that when a potentially hazardous chemical leaked from a coal processing plant into West Virginia's water supply, officials didn't know if there would be devastating effects from drinking the contaminated water.

The potential for more disasters like this is far too great, and consumers have far too little information about the chemicals stored near their water sources or used near where they work and raise their families. We need real reform of this law now.

Please take action today! Use this form to stand with the Environmental Working Group – the nation's most effective environmental health research and advocacy organization -- and demand that Congress enact real toxics reform!

  • Stand with Gov. Brown!

Governor Jerry Brown took a major step to protect the environment and public health last year when he adopted new California fire safety regulations that permit furniture makers to stop saturating their products with toxic flame retardant chemicals.

But now the chemical industry - specifically the fire retardant producer Chemtura - is suing the state to block these new regulations.

  • Defeat Big Food's Bad GE Bill

Big Food will stop at nothing to hide basic information about what's in your food. If its proposal were to become law, it would make it impossible for any state to require labeling of GE foods and would also block any attempt by states to make it illegal to put a "natural" label on products that contain GE ingredients.

Take action today to defeat Big Food's bad bill!

Environmental Working Group is getting to work! We have big goals for 2014 and are fighting hard for you. From fighting to reform the country's broken chemicals policies to making sure foods with genetically engineered ingredients are labeled, we're not going to back down.

We need you to take action today!

Please take just a minute to use the form below - EWG’s priorities are your priorities too.

  • I voted YES on I-522

Right now, federal law does not require that genetically engineered foods be labeled. I-522 - "The People’s Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act" - would change that in Washington state. If passed, it will require labeling of products that contain genetically engineered ingredients.

    I voted YES on I-522!

Use the form below to let EWG know you voted.

  • I don't want mercury in my mascara!

During recent negotiations for an international treaty on mercury pollution - a treaty that will ban high-mercury light bulbs, thermometers and mercury-based skin lighteners - the United States actually fought FOR an exemption for mascara and other eye cosmetics.

    That’s simply ridiculous.

Tell the FDA that you want mercury and mercury-based ingredients out of personal care products!

  • Pledge your support for I-522!

This month, Washington state voters will vote on a ballot initiative - I-522 - to require products with genetically engineered ingredients to be labeled.

As soon as one state requires labeling, it's only a matter of time until there's a national requirement to label GE foods. That's why food and chemical industries are spending millions of dollars to defeat this critical ballot initiative.

If you care about what’s in your food, then on-the-ground activists in Washington state need your support right away.

Use the form below to show your support for I-522 today!

  • Demand safe drinking water!

The California Department of Public Health is about to leave you unprotected from hexavalent chromium.

After taking 10 years to develop legal standards for the amount of hexavalent chromium that can pollute drinking water, the agency has proposed a limit that is 500 times higher than the level California state toxicologists have determined to be safe.

The department is accepting public comment until October 11.

Use the form below to tell The California Department of Public Health that you want real protection from this potentially cancer-causing chemical.

  • Tell Revlon and L'Oreal to stop using dangerous ingredients!

Right now, cosmetics companies can put just about anything in their products - even chemicals associated with cancer and endocrine disruption.

EWG thinks this is downright dangerous. Many companies are reformulating their products to remove formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, like DMDM Hydantoin and Quaternium-15, and four parabens linked to endocrine disruption.

But Revlon and L'Oreal are sticking with their formulations and leaving their customers at risk.

Use the form below to add your name to EWG's petition to L'Oreal and Revlon today - help us get to 100,000 signatures by October 11!

  • Demand safer strawberries!

Dangerous chemicals can be used when growing strawberries - chemicals like the fumigant chloropicrin. Sprayed on fields before planting, this volatile pesticide is known to drift to communities with residences, schools, playgrounds and businesses. It poses serious risks to the health of people who live and work near strawberry fields.

EWG has partnered with the Pesticide Action Network to deliver a petition to Brian Leahy, director of the California Department of Pesticide Regulation, demanding strong regulations for chloropicrin. • Strengthen cell phone radiation standards!

The Federal Communications Commission's cell phone radiation standards haven't been updated for 17 years, but American cell phone usage has changed dramatically. And scientists are exploring links between cell phone radiation and cancer and other health problems. They don't have definitive answers yet. But one thing is clear: it's time for the FCC to take action to protect Americans' health.

The FCC is currently reviewing its cell phone radiation standards. Make sure the FCC knows that this is the time to strengthen its standards, not weaken them!

Use the form below to sign EWG’s petition to the FCC!

  • Thank Senator Boxer for being a public health champion!

Sen. Barbara Boxer is fighting to protect children's health from toxic chemicals and needs to hear from you today that you are standing with her.

As chair of the Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee, Sen. Boxer held a crucial hearing that called into question whether the Chemical Safety Improvement Act is strong enough to protect our children and other vulnerable populations. She knows that as it's currently written, the industry-backed CSIA will do little to reform our nation's broken chemical policy and protect our families. The bill does not adequately protect vulnerable populations, does not place the burden on industry to prove that chemicals are safe and would stop state legislators from enacting measures to protect their citizens when the federal government fails to do so.

Please take a minute to fill out this form to thank Sen. Boxer for her leadership and tell her you've got her back. We need to make sure that any chemical safety bill will protect our health and our families - real reform that Sen. Boxer is fighting for.

  • Defeat the farm bill!

The House is bringing back the same bad farm bill.

This is the worst piece of environmental legislation EWG has ever seen, and it must not pass. The bill guts conservation programs while giving millions of your tax dollars to the wealthiest agribusinesses.

Use the form below to tell your member of Congress to vote "NO" on the farm bill!

Raising animals in large, corporate factory farms increases the use - and reduces the effectiveness - of antibiotics. The USDA helps subsidize these factory farms, also known as Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), at the expense of smaller family farms that take responsibility for the health of our food and value of the land. Even more ridiculous is that the USDA is diverting funds to these farms from a program that is designed to help the environment.

Take action and tell Washington to enact a Farm Bill that rewards responsible farmers who don't run factory farms and overuse antibiotics. Because America's food, our farms and our families are Worth Protecting.

  • Support a healthier, more sustainable farm bill!

The farm bill comes to the floor of the House this week and no environmentalist should support it as written. It expands unlimited crop insurance subsidies to the wealthiest agribusinesses while making deep cuts to nutrition and conservation programs.

We need you to take action right now opposing this corporate megafarm boondoggle and supporting reform amendments.

Use the form below to tell your member of Congress to oppose H.R. 1947, unless it is amended to protect nutrition and conservation programs and reform crop insurance.

Decades of harmful agricultural policies have caused severe damage to our Great Lakes. Fertilizer-laden runoff has created massive algae blooms that threaten our drinking water supplies and our fisheries.

Decades of harmful agricultural policies have caused severe damage to the Chesapeake Bay. Polluted runoff from farm fields threaten crabs, oysters and our natural heritage.

  • We need strong leadership to demand real reform!

It's time for Washington to make laws that protect us from harmful chemicals, not laws that protect the companies that make those chemicals.

A new bill has been introduced in Congress, and it is unacceptable. It falls far short of the reforms Americans need and have been assured were in the works. Sen. Boxer is the chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee - the committee that will oversee this bill. We need her leadership now more than ever.

Use the form below to tell Sen. Boxer we are counting on her leadership to fight for real reform and reject this unacceptable bill.

Decades of harmful agricultural policies have contaminated and depleted our water supplies. To save our rivers and farmland for future generations, we need to reward framers who use less water to grow food.

Take action and tell Washington to enact a Farm Bill that protects family farmers who help us protect and preserve our water. Because our food, our farms and our families are worth protecting.

  • Label genetically engineered foods!

Every American has a right to know what's in our food - including whether it contains genetically engineered ingredients.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., introduced an amendment to the 2013 farm bill that would show support for what more than 90 percent of Americans want: labeling foods with genetically engineered ingredients.

Tell your senators today that you want them to support this right-to-know amendment before the Senate votes on farm bill amendments.

  • Tell your assemblymember to vote "NO!" on AB 7

It's time to insist on strong regulations as soon as possible. Several bills related to hydraulic fracturing - or fracking - are currently moving through the California state legislature - many of which are good bills that EWG is supporting. But Assembly Bill 7 is not one of those bills. The Assembly Appropriations Committee is expected to vote on it next week.

Your assemblymember sits on the Appropriations Committee. Please take action to stop this dangerous bill today!

  • Tell Congress: Reform our broken cosmetics regulations!

Right now, cosmetics companies can put almost any ingredient they want into personal care products without having to prove they are safe. It's way past time for Congress to step up and start looking out for us.

Thankfully, Reps. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) and Ed Markey (D-Mass.) have introduced H.R 1385, the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2013. This legislation would require pre-market safety assessment of cosmetics; establish a list of ingredients that cannot be used in cosmetics; give FDA strong recall authority to get unsafe ingredients off the market; and require full disclosure of ingredients used in cosmetics.

Take action today. Demand that Congress get dangerous chemicals out of our personal care products.

Use the form below to ask your member of Congress to co-sponsor the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2013.

  • Stop unnecessary antibiotic use in animals!

Misuse of antibiotics in healthy animals is breeding surprisingly high numbers of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in our supermarket meat.

Rep. Louis Slaughter (D-N.Y.) has introduced the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act, or PAMTA, to help reverse this trend by requiring the federal Food and Drug Administration to review approvals of antibiotics for nontherapeutic use in food animals. The agency would withdraw those approvals that threaten human health by encouraging proliferation of superbugs.

We want healthy food, not food that carries superbugs. Please take action today.

Use the form below to tell your member of Congress to support PAMTA!

  • Support healthy and sustainable farming!

The Senate Agriculture Committee is going to vote on the 2013 farm bill in the next few days. Crop insurance subsidies cost taxpayers more than $9 billion a year and right now, there is no tie between these subsidies and healthy farming practices.

It's time for federal food and farm policies to support farmers who practice sustainable farming and produce healthy food.

Use the form below to tell your senator to support a farm bill that ties crop insurance payments to healthy and sustainable farming practices.

  • Pledge to vote "YES" on I-522

Right now, federal law does not require that genetically engineered foods be labeled. I-522 - "The People’s Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act" - would change that in Washington state. If passed, it will require labeling of products that contain genetically engineered ingredients.

Take EWG's pledge to vote "YES" on I-522!

Use the form below to sign our pledge.

  • Label genetically engineered foods!

Every American has a right to know what's in our food - including whether it contains genetically engineered ingredients.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., introduced a bill that would do what more than 90 percent of Americans want: require foods with genetically engineered ingredients to be labeled.

Let your senators and representative know today that you want them to support this right-to-know legislation.

  • Stop unnecessary antibiotic use in animals!

Misuse of antibiotics in healthy animals is breeding antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Government lab tests of supermarket meat show surprisingly high numbers of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In 2011, nearly 30 million pounds of antibiotics were sold for use in food animals - roughly four times the quantity sold to treat people.

Legislation has been introduced in the both the U.S. House and Senate, to help reverse this trend by requiring the federal Food and Drug Administration to review approvals of antibiotics for nontherapeutic use in food animals. The agency would withdraw those approvals that threaten human health by encouraging proliferation of superbugs that can be resistant to antibiotics designed to kill them. When superbugs infect humans, the illnesses they trigger are hard to treat and in some cases lead to death.

We want healthy food, not food that carries superbugs. Please take action today.

Use the form below to tell your members of Congress to stop unnecessary antibiotic use in animals!

  • Sign EWG's healthy and sustainable farm petition!

Environmental Working Group is partnering with Organic Valley and organic farmers to make sure the next farm bill fully funds programs that reward farm stewardship and supports organic farmers.

Later this spring, organic farmers plan to travel to Washington to meet with lawmakers to fight for programs that reward good stewardship and support organic growing. We need you to stand with them.

Congress needs to know that organic farmers have the backing of EWG and our 1 million supporters. Take just a minute to add your name to our petition calling for support for healthy and sustainable farming.

  • Get flame retardants out of our furniture!

Earlier this year, Governor Jerry Brown proposed regulations that would end the widespread use of highly toxic fire retardant chemicals in foam furniture sold in California.

State officials are accepting public comments on these new regulations. We need you to take action today - before the comment period closes tomorrow! - and tell the California Department of Consumer Affairs that you support these new regulations.

  • Whole Foods Market committed to label ALL GE foods!

Great news - Whole Foods Market just announced that the company will require all genetically engineered foods on its shelves to be labeled by 2018! It is the first national grocery chain to do so.

Whole Foods Market already has 3,300 products that are not genetically engineered, more than any other retailer in North America. Now it is taking it a step further. By 2018, any food sold in Whole Foods Market's U.S. and Canadian stores that contains genetically engineered ingredients must be labeled as such. This even includes meat that was fed genetically engineered feed - going beyond what any other nation requires for GE labeling. It may seem like five years is a long time, but this is a huge task. A vast majority of field corn, soybeans and canola seed grown in the U.S. come from genetically engineered seeds.

We predict that Whole Foods Market's announcement will bring immediate changes from many of its suppliers. This announcement is a game-changer for federal and state-level labeling initiatives.

It is also a major victory for consumers who want to know what they are eating. Please take a minute and join EWG in thanking Whole Foods Market for doing the right thing on GE labeling.

  • Stop the Monsanto rider!

The Senate is voting on amendments to a continuing resolution spending bill with a dangerous Monsanto rider that would allow industry to continue growing genetically engineered food that may not be safe. We need your help immediately to stop this rider.

The Monsanto rider would strip federal courts of their authority to halt the sale and planting of an illegal, potentially hazardous genetically engineered crop. It would compel the U.S. Department of Agriculture to allow continued planting of that same crop upon request.

Luckily, Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) has introduced an amendment that would block the Monsanto rider and close this backdoor approval for genetically engineered crops.

Use the form below to email your senators in support of the Tester amendment that would block the Monsanto rider. Make your voice heard before the vote!

  • Tell the FDA that genetically engineered salmon should be labeled!

The federal Food and Drug Administration is on track to approve AquaBounty AquaAdvantave transgentic salmon as the first genetically engineered animal intended for us to eat. This new hybrid salmon will combine DNA from Atlantic salmon, Chinook salmon and the eel-like ocean pout. These genetically engineered salmon will produce enough growth hormones year-round to make the fish grow at twice their natural rate.

And they will be in supermarkets without a label!

You have a right to know what you are eating and feeding your family. Use the form below to sign our petition to the FDA!

  • Tell Gov. Andrew Cuomo you've got his back!

Governor Andrew Cuomo has delayed his decision to lift the moratorium on shale gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing in New York. The reason for the delay: the health assessment has not been completed. This is great news. The moratorium should not be lifted until sufficient research into the health effects of fracking has been conducted, and the state has compiled enough scientific information to know how and whether drilling can be done safely.

But Cuomo is under attack from the Big Oil and Gas industry for the delay. We need to let him know we have his back! Take action today and thank him for standing up for public health.

Use the form below to let him know you’ve got his back and to thank him for looking out for New Yorkers’ health.

  • Cut farm subsidies not food programs!

Congress may soon vote on a new farm bill - the federal measure with the greatest impact on the food we eat. Currently, your tax dollars go to highly profitable agribusinesses that don't need the help. If cuts are made, let's tell Congress to cut subsidies for Big Ag, not food programs for hungry kids.

Sign EWG's petition to Congress demanding that it cut farm subsidies - not food programs for the hungry!

  • Label genetically engineered foods!

Californians are banding together to move a bill through the state legislature that would require foods with genetically engineered ingredients to be labeled. But first, a state legislator must take the lead.

Your legislator is considering stepping up. Use the form below to tell him or her you want a food-labeling leader. If a legislator doesn’t take the lead this month, this bill will die without ever being considered.

  • Tell Congress to say NO! to the secret farm bill

Right now, Big Agriculture's lobbyists - with help from compliant politicians - are trying to get large government handouts for corporate mega-farms. We have to stop it - before it's included in the fiscal cliff bill.

For weeks, advocates for corporate mega-farms have been covertly trying to jam a $1 trillion farm bill into legislation designed to avert America's fiscal crisis.

Time is running out. Congress must hear from you. Tell Congressional leaders to throw out this cynical ploy by the subsidy lobby to subvert reform - and democracy.

There are only a few days to turn the tide, and we need your rapid response!

  • Pledge to vote "YES" on Proposition 37!

Right now, the United States does not require that genetically engineered foods be labeled. Proposition 37 would change that in California. If passed, it will require labeling of products that contain genetically engineered ingredients.

Use the form below to sign our pledge.

  • Put the brakes on fracking!

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo may drill first and ask questions later. He appears to have the support of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. In a Washington Post op-ed co-authored with George P. Mitchell, who pioneered modern hydraulic fracturing methods, Bloomberg sang the praises of fracking for natural gas. Since he is a national figure, his backing can give the governor cover to lift the moratorium. We must make sure New York puts the brakes on fracking until more comprehensive research has been done. Add your name to our petition calling on Mayor Bloomberg to retract his misleading remarks.

Johnson & Johnson is the first major personal care products manufacturer to take such an important action in favor of its customers' safety.

This is a major victory for Americans' health and safety. Please take a minute today to join EWG in thanking Johnson & Johnson for doing the right thing!

  • Take sunscreens with bogus claims off your shelves!

In 2011, the federal Food and Drug Administration issued new sunscreen regulations that banned the terms "sunblock," "sweatproof" and "waterproof" on sunscreen labels. Since the 1990s, the FDA has considered these terms misleading. But just last week, EWG researchers found sunscreens using these over-hyped claims still on store shelves.

The FDA has delayed action again. We can't wait another summer for the government to act. Our best shot at getting manufacturers to stop making these empty promises is to tell stores to clear their shelves of sunscreens with these bogus marketing claims.

  • Support a healthy and more sustainable farm bill!

The Senate Agriculture Committee has passed its version of the 2012 farm bill, and it will be on the Senate floor for debate any day now.

As it's now written, this bill will continue to give away tens of billions of taxpayer dollars in subsidies each year to the largest industrial commodity farm operations, which are wreaking havoc on our environment.

Meanwhile, the programs that invest in local, organic and healthy food and protect our natural resources go drastically underfunded.

When the bill comes to the Senate floor, there will be an opportunity to amend it to redirect billions of dollars from crop insurance subsidies to nutrition, conservation and local and healthy food programs.

But it will only happen if your senators hear from you. It's time to break the farm lobby's long-standing grip and make sure that Congress hears the voices of citizens like you who want your tax dollars to support a healthy and more sustainable farm bill.

Use the form below to email your senators today or click here to find your senators' phone number and call. We need to make our voices heard.

  • Stop the giveaway to Big Ag!

Next week, the Senate Agriculture Committee will start writing its version of the 2012 farm bill - the single biggest factor in determining what ends up on your plate. But right now Congress is only providing minimal support for healthy, local and organic foods while expanding wasteful subsidies and giveaways that support the wealthiest agribusinesses – at the expense of family farmers.

It’s incredibly important that Congress get this right - so we at EWG and CREDO Action are teaming up to stop the giveaway to Big Ag and support food and farm policies that protect our environment and expand access to healthy food.

Use the form below to tell your senators today: Stop the giveaway to Big Ag. Pass a farm bill that supports local, healthy and organic food!

  • Congress is protecting Big Oil - not American consumers

Last year the EPA approved E15, a blend of gasoline with 15 percent ethanol, for use in vehicles manufactured after 2000. This E15 blend runs hotter and is more corrosive than gasoline currently on the market. It can cause serious damage to and void the warranties of some vehicle and off-road engines.

Now some lawmakers have proposed bills that would provide complete liability protection for ethanol producers, oil companies, gas station owners and others for damage caused to engines by E15 - or any other motor fuel. Experience with MTBE, a gasoline additive notorious for leaking from underground storage tanks and contaminating drinking water, should serve as a cautionary tale.

Congress should stand up for you and other American consumers instead of protecting Big Oil. Tell your member of Congress today to oppose this legislation.

  • Get BPA out of our food's packaging!

This month, we have an unprecedented opportunity to make sure our food is free of bisphenol A. By March 31 - just days away - the federal Food and Drug Administration plans to decide whether or not to continue allowing food packaging that leaches BPA. There is no time to lose - the FDA has to hear from you before it makes its call. The government needs to know that Americans will not stand for food contaminated with toxic chemicals. Email the FDA today and tell them you want BPA out of your food's packaging!

  • Keep secret chemicals out of California's water!

Oil and gas companies are drilling in California using the controversial technology known as "fracking," with hardly any oversight. This leaves your groundwater at risk of contamination. We need your voice today to change that!

Assemblymember Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) has filed a common-sense bill (AB 591) that would ensure that California's citizens have access to information about fracking in our communities. AB 591 would require oil and gas companies to disclose - for the first time - when and where they are fracking, what chemicals they are using and how much scarce water their operations consume. All of this information would be published on a public web site, creating one of the toughest fracking disclosure requirements in the nation.

This bill needs your help to become law. Your state legislators and Governor Brown need to hear that you want them to support AB 591!

  • Stand up for local food!

Americans are clamoring for affordable, locally produced food that's better for our health and the environment (and tastier too!). A new bill that would make more organic and locally produced food available in our schools, grocery stores and restaurants has just been introduced! U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio)'s Local Farms, Food and Jobs Act aims to help local family farmers who use sustainable practices compete with bigger, better-financed agricultural conglomerates.

This bill will face a tough fight. Tell Congress that you and your family want more healthy, local food today!

  • Don't cave to the pesticide lobby!

EWG counts on the U.S. Department of Agriculture to publish complete, unbiased pesticide data to create EWG's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce. But for the last two years, the pesticide lobby, especially a front group called the Alliance for Food and Farming, has waged a multi-front campaign to get the USDA to repackage its pesticide data with industry talking points that downplay risks and consumers' concerns. And they attacked EWG's Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce.

We expect to see USDA's 2010 pesticide data soon and fully expect that the agency has not caved to industry pressure. Making sure you have the information you need is too important. Take action today. Tell the USDA not to cave to industry's pressure - you want to know what you are eating.

  • Get methyl iodide out of our food!

California Governor Jerry Brown just appointed Brian Leahy - an organic farmer - to head California's Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR).

Brown has delayed action on the cancer-causing strawberry pesticide methyl iodide for more than a year, saying that the decision should rest with the head of the pesticide regulation agency. Now that Leahy is taking the helm, he can act on the issue. California has the opportunity to get methyl iodide out of our food.

Environmental Working Group is partnering with the Pesticide Action Network to make sure Director Leahy knows you want methyl iodide off the market. Sign the petition to Governor Brown and Director Leahy today!

  • Grow Organics!

Congress will soon vote on a new farm bill - the federal measure with the greatest impact on the food we eat. Currently, your tax dollars go to highly profitable agribusinesses that don't need the help and to people who don't live anywhere near a farm. The government does very little to help farmers grow organic fruits and vegetables. We want to change all that!

Tell Congress that you want your tax dollars to go to programs that help families gain greater access to healthy, affordable food.

  • Protect Colorado's children from the effects of fracking and drilling!

Encana Corp. has plans to open eight natural gas wells near elementary schools in Erie, Co that will utilize fracking. Fracking and drilling have been linked to drinking water contamination and more research is needed into the effects of fracking to determine how and whether it can be conducted safely.

  • Tell the Super Committee to say "NO!" to the Secret Farm Bill.

We were afraid of this, and now it’s for real. Right now, Big Agriculture's lobbyists - with help from compliant politicians - are trying to get large government handouts for corporate mega-farms. We have to stop it - before the Congressional Super Committee's deadline Wednesday.

For weeks, the Ag Committees' leaders have been covertly writing the next federal farm bill, hoping to slip it into law through the top-secret Super Committee process.

No hearings. No debate. Just billions in government handouts for corporate mega-farms.

Tell the Super Committee and Congressional leadership to say "NO!" to the Secret Farm Bill. There are only a few days to turn the tide, and we need your rapid response!

  • The Delaware River Basin Commission canceled its vote!

Thanks to the pressure put on by EWG supporters like you and other grassroots activists, the Delaware River Basin Commission has canceled their vote on fracking.

15.6 million people get their drinking water from the Delaware watershed. It should be a no-brainer to protect this vital resource.

This five-member panel could vote in the future on a plan that will allow thousands more gas wells to be drilled and "fracked" in the Delaware River Basin. Your governor sits on the panel and we need to keep the pressure on! We need your voice to make sure that he votes no.

Tell your governor to vote no today!

  • Tell the Super Committee to say "NO" to a Secret Farm Bill

If we don't act now, Big Agribusiness and their powerful Congressional allies could take action that would favor commodity-based processed food at the expense of healthy, organic food. They're trying to write the next farm bill and plan to slip it into law through the top-secret Super Committee process without justification, open debate or a single vote.

Not only are they shutting out food experts, health advocates, taxpayers and the rest of us from the discussion, but Big Ag's lobbyists also want to create a new handout that would guarantee income to the biggest farmers - despite their current record profits. Congress should be helping people in need, not shoveling money to mega farms.

Tell our Congressional leaders to say "NO" to a Secret Farm Bill and greedy lobbyists.

Big food companies and their highly paid advertising agencies are aggressively lobbying the government to kill the federal Interagency Working Group's new children's food marketing guidelines, which aim to promote sales of more healthful foods.

Food companies are calling these voluntary guidelines "irredeemable," "counterproductive," "unnecessary" and "monumentally flawed." They're pushing for their own, weaker set of guidelines instead.

  • Protect our drinking water!

The oil and gas industry claimed for years that there's no evidence that hydraulic fracturing -- fracking -- has contaminated drinking water wells.

Our study shows that the Environmental Protection Agency concluded 25 years ago that hydraulic fracturing can -- and did -- contaminate an underground source of drinking water and that such contamination was "illustrative" of fracking's risks, blowing holes in the industry's argument.

We're tired of the oil and gas industry's propaganda. It's past time to follow up on the EPA's findings with more rigorous scientific research. Join us in calling on the EPA to look into the risks of fracking and make sure that our drinking water is safe. The oil and gas industry must be held accountable.

Both the California Senate and the Assembly have passed AB 1319, but the bill has to be voted on one more time by the Assembly before moving forward.

  • Ask Congress to Back Healthy School Food

The U.S. Department of Agriculture wants to improve school lunches and breakfasts. It's about time -- USDA school meal standards haven't been changed in 15 years. USDA is calling for school meals with more fruits and vegetables, less fat, more whole grains, less salt, fat-free or low-fat milk, less salt, fewer saturated and trans fats and moderate calories. But this solid proposal is meeting opposition on Capitol Hill. Environmental Working Group is partnering with the Center for Science in Public Interest and others to fight for healthy school food. • Tell your House member to co-sponsor the Safe Cosmetics Act!

The government has no authority to require companies to test personal care products for safety before they reach store shelves -- so industry can use almost any ingredient it wants in its products. Since most people apply more than 100 different ingredients each day, that's preposterous.

But Reps. Jan Schakowksy (D-IL), Ed Markey (D-MA) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) want to change all that. They recently introduced the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011 (H.R. 2359). This important new bill would require disclosure and pre-market safety testing of all ingredients, and give the federal Food and Drug Administration authority to recall dangerous products. It levels the playing field for small businesses with multinational corporations by requiring them all to meet the same standard of safety and to disclose all the ingredients in their products.

It also recognizes the unique role of do-it-yourselfers and small cosmetics companies by exempting some from registering with the FDA or paying the registration fee.

But introducing a bill is only the first step! The Safe Cosmetics Act needs co-sponsors to help it advance through Congress. Your House member needs to hear from you today!

The U.S. Senate is about to take up the 2012 agriculture spending bill. The House-passed version cut nearly $1 billion from farmland conservation programs. At the same time, it protected subsidy programs that benefit the largest and wealthiest agribusinesses and landowners.

EWG's work shows that under the federal farm bill, our government doles out huge subsidies to big farms that don't need the help and to a lot of folks who don't live anywhere near a farm. Some of this money would be better spent supporting working farm families, sustainable farming, protecting the environment and providing healthy, unprocessed food to low-income families and children who depend on government nutrition programs.

In short, the farm bill needs to become a food bill. We are calling on all "eaters" to stand with us and tell Congress that your tax dollars go to programs that feed people, not those that fool people.

The governor needs to hear from you today that she should veto HB 242 and SB 709, and that fracking should remain illegal in North Carolina until we know how and whether it can be conducted safely.

  • Your U.S. representative needs to hear from you today!

Next week, the House of Representatives will vote on a spending bill (H.R. 2112) that cuts key nutrition initiatives and programs that protect water and soil.

One of the most egregious provisions will force the U.S. Department of Agriculture to roll back its proposed healthy standards for school lunch -- dismantling a huge step forward for children's health. Meanwhile, the bill leaves intact lavish crop insurance and commodity subsidies for large agribusinesses and producers of industrial crops like corn and soybeans -- at a time when these farm businesses enjoy record income.

Your member of Congress needs to hear from you right now that you want a "No" vote on H.R. 2112, that you oppose any roll back in healthy food standards and the misguided spending cuts the bill would make.

Use the form below to contact your representative and demand a "No" vote on H.R. 2112

Tell the FDA to stop dragging its feet!

The federal Food and Drug Administration proposed sunscreen safety regulations in 1978 but has never put them into force -- which means the sunscreen industry doesn’t have to verify that its sunscreens work or provide adequate UVA protection or even check their "waterproof" claims.

Stand with EWG Action Fund to demand sunscreen safety regulations now!

  • Protect California's Drinking Water!

The California Assembly is set to vote on AB 591 tomorrow. This bill will take important first steps in regulating hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") in California.

This controversial drilling practice is when oil and gas companies inject -- at high pressure -- millions of gallons of water and toxic chemicals (like kerosene and diesel fuel) into gas and oil wells. This fluid fractures underground formations, unlocking natural gas that has been trapped.

Drinking water contamination and property damage have been associated with hydraulic fracturing across the nation, from Pennsylvania to Wyoming. In one incident that polluted a Colorado creek, nearby groundwater was still contaminated with benzene -- six years later.

Your Assembly member is a deciding vote and needs to hear that you want a "Yes" vote today!

Use the form below to tell your Assembly member to vote "Yes" on AB 591!

  • Ban BPA in Oregon!

The Oregon Senate voted to ban BPA in April! But the final decision for Oregon kids lies in the state House of Representatives and their support is not guaranteed. This critical bill (SB 695) would protect Oregon's children by banning the hormone-disrupting chemical BPA in baby bottles, sippy cups, sports water bottles and some infant formula cans.

Your representative needs to hear from you right now -- your voice is critical to moving this bill forward. Make sure that outside industry lobbyists don't have more sway than real Oregonians!

  • Ban BPA in California!

The California Assembly is poised to vote on AB 1319, the Toxin-Free Infants and Toddlers Act. This bill would protect California's children by banning the hormone-disrupting chemical bisphenol A in baby bottles, sippy cups, infant formula and baby food.

  • I want safer personal care products!

The government has no authority to require companies to test personal care products for safety before they reach the store shelf. Right now, the industry can use almost any ingredient or raw material in soap, shampoo or makeup without government review or approval. The industry's self-policing panel, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review, hasn't bothered to evaluate more than half of the thousands of ingredients that companies put in their products and many consumers apply more than 100 different ingredients everyday.

According to EWG's research, 22 percent of all personal care products, including those made for children's use, may contain the cancer-causing contaminant 1,4-Dioxane, and more than half of all sunscreens contain oxybenzone, a potential hormone disruptor. Other studies have raised serious concerns about lead in lipsticks, secret chemicals in fragrance and artificial preservatives in personal care products.

The U.S. government isn't doing its job in protecting us from these hazards. It's time for Congress to step up to the plate.

    Speak up for change!
Stand with EWG Action Fund today and sign this petition demanding that Congress take action and make sure that personal care products are safe for our families.

  • The next farm bill should be a healthy food bill!

Every five years Congress writes a new farm bill, the critical legislation that guides federal food policy. Turning the next farm bill into a healthy food bill is guaranteed to be an uphill battle. We hope people like you will speak up against the wealthy agricultural lobby's monopoly on our food and demand a shift in budget priorities. If we want to loosen Big Ag's grip and direct more money to healthy school meals, organic and local farmers and programs that protect water and soil -- we need to start now.

With Senator Stabenow heading to Michigan for a farm bill field hearing, it's the perfect time for her to hear from her constituents.

Use the form below to let Senator Stabenow know you want the next farm bill to focus on healthy food and sustainable farming practices.

  • Ban BPA in Iowa!

The Iowa Senate has passed a partial ban of the plastics component and endocrine-disrupting chemical bisphenol A. The Iowa House of Representatives is now poised to vote on the same bill, SF 405, that would ban BPA from baby bottles, sippy cups, teething rings and pacifiers.

  • Taking food out of the mouths of babes

The budget legislation passed by House Republicans in the wee hours of February 19 (no Democrats voted for it) would slash $747 million -- about 10 percent -- from the 2011 budget for the Special Supplemental Feeding Program for Women, Infants and Children. It's commonly known as "WIC."

Created in 1974, WIC provides very modest but crucial food assistance to low-income moms and little kids who are at "nutrition risk." To qualify, recipients must be poor -- very poor. Some 68 percent of WIC beneficiaries live at, or below, the poverty line. That's about $22,000 for a family of four.

Cutting funding to WIC during the worst economy in 80 years is an unacceptably lopsided and wrong-headed approach to food and agriculture policy. The House Republicans' budget inflicts serious damage to a food program for poor kids and pregnant women, but it cut not one penny from the farm subsidies that go to big agribusinesses and wealthy landowners -- at a time when they are enjoying record-high crop prices and incomes. By cutting just a fraction of these subsidies we could have held WIC harmless.

Because the budget process is ongoing, this isn't the last time your representative will vote on funding for food programs. Join EWG Action Fund in calling on members of Congress to do the right thing on future votes.

Use the form below to tell your representative that you want a fair, equitable food system that begins to help the country heal its dietary and environmental woes.

  • Your tax dollars shouldn't fund disinformation about pesticides in food!

The Alliance for Food and Farming (AFF), a California-based pro-pesticide, big agriculture group, has gone on the attack. It makes the bizarre charge that Environmental Working Group's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides has influenced people to eat fewer vegetables. In fact, conventional produce consumption is flat -- but demand for organic fruits and vegetables is booming.

We were shocked when the California Department of Food and Agriculture and U.S. Department of Agriculture handed $180,000 of your money to this front group -- specifically to counter "claims by activist groups about unsafe levels of pesticides."

If you think financing attacks on non-profit food safety watchdog groups like EWG is an outrageous way to spend your tax dollars, the USDA needs to hear from you today. Nearly 55,000 EWG supporters have already signed, but the USDA still hasn't released their data on pesticide residues on produce.

Fill out the form below the petition to add your signature.

  • The government shouldn't fund disinformation campaigns!

The Alliance for Food and Farming (AFF), a California-based public relations group of pro-pesticide, big agricultural producers has gone on the attack. Earlier this year they said that EWG's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides is influencing people to eat fewer vegetables. And we were shocked when the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) awarded a $180,000 grant to this industry front group -- specifically to counter "claims by activist groups about unsafe levels of pesticides."

If you think attacking non-profit, independent, food safety watchdog groups, like EWG, that inform the public about pesticides in food is an outrageous way to spend taxpayer funds, the CDFA and the USDA need to hear from you today.

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) plans to offer an amendment to this bill that would ban the hormone-disrupting chemical bisphenol A (BPA) from sippy cups, baby bottles, baby food and infant formula.

We need a strong show of support! Contact your Senators TODAY and urge them to support both the new food safety bill and Senator Feinstein's BPA amendment.

Introducing the Toxic Chemicals Safety Act of 2010 (H.R. 5820) in the US House of Representatives was just the first step. To keep this bill moving, we need your help recruiting co-sponsors.

The Toxic Chemicals Safety Act will reform America's broken and outdated toxic chemicals policy by requiring chemical manufacturers to prove that their products are safe before they reach our shelves.

    We need your help today

Please take a moment to complete the short form below to ask your Representative to co-sponsor this historic bill. Our elected officials need to hear from their constituents that this is important.

  • Tell your Senator to support SB 797

The California Toxin-Free Infants and Toddlers Act, Senate Bill 797, has passed the California Assembly. It passed the state Senate last year, but we need to do it again! If passed, this bill would ban the hormone-disrupting chemical bisphenol A (BPA) in baby bottles, sippy cups, and infant formula and food containers. The Senate has to affirm the Assembly’s amendments before the bill can reach the Governor.

Your state Senator's vote is crucial. To keep California’s kids safe, your Senator needs to hear from you today.

  • Pledge your support for the 2010 Safe Cosmetics Act

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) should have the authority it needs to regulate cosmetics and personal care products – so that you can trust that what you’re buying is safe for you and your family.

The Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010, H.R. 5786, introduced by Representatives Schakowsky (IL-09), Baldwin (WI-02) and Markey (MA-07), will greatly expand the powers of the FDA to regulate the ingredients in cosmetics.  The FDA will be able to prohibit the use of certain ingredients, including carcinogens and reproductive and developmental toxins; recall products that fail to meet safety standards; and require product labels to name each ingredient, including fragrance.

We need this legislation urgently. Currently, manufacturers may use almost any ingredient or raw material in your soap, shampoo or makeup without government review or approval. According to EWG’s research, 22 percent of all personal care products, including children’s products, may contain a cancer-causing ingredient, 1,4-Dioxane, and 60 percent of sunscreens contain oxybenzone, a potential hormone disruptor. Other studies have raised alarms about lead in lipstick, secret chemicals in fragrance and preservatives in personal care products.

The status quo is unacceptable. And we need the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 to ensure that we are able to protect ourselves and our families from potentially harmful ingredients.

Please pledge your support for the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 today.
